Crossing over to Skye

There are three methods of travel onto the island between Easter and autumn :

1. The Skye bridge from Kyle of Lochalsh is by far the busiest route and will probably get busier now that crossing is FREE !!

You pass Eilan Donan Castle in Dornie on the A87, 10 miles before the Skye Bridge. It has starred in many films and a million posters.

2. The Caledonian Macbrayne car ferry from Mallaig to Armadale on Skye which should be booked in advance. There is now an all year round car service but it is much reduced between October and Easter using a smaller boat very occasionally.

Loch Duich from the road to Glenelg and the car ferry fully loaded !

3. A small privately run turntable ferry carrying 4 cars at a time on a first come, first served basis from Glenelg to Kylerhea on Skye. The ferry runs between Easter and October. There is terrific scenery on the roads to and from the ferry although some of the driving is not for the 'faint hearted'. (A reminder of how travel to Skye was many years ago).
